Hundreds of animals were treated, dozens of families were helped, and thousands of children are now in the know about responsible pet ownership!
Free State, South Africa (15 April 2026) – The team at Cluny Animal Trust has wrapped up an impactful weekend in Mamafubedu, Petrus Steyn. They were stationed for two full days to support a community that clearly adores its animals.
They sterilised 64 animals (37 dogs and 27 cats). Another 302 animals were treated with vaccinations, deworming, and tick and flea care. They also handed out 127kg of food and 30 collars to pet owners who needed the extra support.
It’s great work on all fronts! Sterilisations reduce the number of unwanted litters, which eases pressure on stretched communities and shelters. Basic treatments like vaccinations and parasite control stop preventable illnesses from spreading. Food support is the simple but meaningful difference between an animal being kept and cared for, or being surrendered or neglected when times are tough.
And this community loves its animals, especially the kitties!
“This township has a truly special and unexpected love for cats, which sets it apart in a beautiful way. It was so rewarding to see both new and familiar faces, and especially to see animals from last year thriving – healthy, happy, and clearly loved.” shares Cluny.
In the days before the outreach, they also visited three schools, speaking to more than 1700 children about caring for animals. Now 1700 current and future pet owners have the tools to look after their companions even better.
This mission was made possible by the Edgard & Cooper Foundation in Europe, along with a dedicated group of local volunteers – Dr Eunice Olevano, Rozelle Taljaard, Dibuseng Sara Ndaba, Jabulani, Mareike, and Madi. Helping hands also provided food and accommodation for the team throughout their 48 hours of impact.
“A very special thanks to our amazing volunteers – they showed up, worked tirelessly, and gave their all! We could not have done what we managed this weekend without [their] help and support” the team shared.
By the time Cluny finally pulled back into Fouriesburg, they were understandably wiped out but knowing they helped truly make a difference was the best reward.
