Project Hope is calling on the community to support ECD centres that provide learning, nutrition and a safe space for children and families.
South Africa (04 August 2026) – Across South Africa, community early childhood development (ECD) centres are doing far more than preparing children for school.
For many young children, these centres are where they learn, play, make friends and discover the world around them. For families facing difficult circumstances, they can also provide nutritious meals, a safe environment and a trusted support system close to home.
Behind many of these centres are remarkable women who take on several roles in a single day. They teach lessons, manage the centre, prepare meals, clean classrooms and care for children, often while earning very little themselves.
Despite the vital role they play, many community ECD centres still face major challenges on their journey towards registration.
Since 2020, Project Hope has been working alongside its partner centres to help them navigate the process. Registration is about more than meeting administrative requirements. It can open the door to government subsidies, helping centres provide affordable and sustainable early learning opportunities for the communities they serve.
The road is not always straightforward. Many centre principals are expected to work through complex regulations without access to computers, reliable internet or the financial resources needed to meet every requirement. Some have returned from inspections feeling discouraged after being asked to make costly changes that are difficult to achieve in under-resourced or rural communities.
While registration remains an important goal, the children in these communities cannot put their learning and development on hold.
That is why Project Hope continues supporting its ECD network through teacher development, safer learning spaces and nutrition programmes, helping centres provide the care and opportunities young children need during some of the most important years of their lives.
Support can help create safer classrooms, strengthen early learning programmes and provide children with the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
