An outpouring of support from the public has helped replace stolen equipment, improve security and keep animals warm this winter.
Vanderbijlpark, South Africa (23 June 2026) – Just days after a break-in left the Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark SPCA facing the loss of essential equipment and supplies, the organisation has been overwhelmed by an outpouring of support from the community.
What began as a heartbreaking setback has turned into a powerful reminder of the kindness that exists within the community, with supporters stepping forward to help replace stolen items and ensure the animals in the SPCA’s care continue to receive the comfort and attention they need.
Among the items stolen during the break-in were washing machines and blankets used to keep animals warm during winter. The loss dealt a significant blow to the organisation, which relies heavily on these resources for its day-to-day operations.
Thanks to additional financial donations, the SPCA has now raised enough money to purchase a second new washing machine, helping staff keep up with the constant demand for clean bedding and blankets.
As winter continues, the influx of blanket donations is expected to make a significant difference to the animals housed at the facility. The organisation also received funds specifically intended for the purchase of more blankets, ensuring there will be no shortage of warmth for the animals during the colder months.
The donations have also allowed the organisation to strengthen security at its premises. An upgrade to the alarm system has already been completed, helping protect both the facility and the animals in its care.
Reflecting on the response, the SPCA described it as “nothing short of overwhelming.”
The organisation added that the community had done far more than they could possibly imagine.
