700 people came together to plant over 5000 trees all in the name of reforesting South African environments; Reforest fest by Greenpop was a hit!
Cape Town, South Africa (28 April 2022) – Around 700 individuals formed teams to plant as many trees as possible at the Greenpop Reforest Fest and they manages to plant just over 5000 trees!
Greenpop was founded in 2010 with the goal of planting more trees in Sub-Saharan Africa. Since then, the organisation has grown from strength to strength. Since 2010, Greenpop has planted over 180,000 trees around South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
Part of their project has been more than just planting trees, it has been about restoring the forests that have disappeared over time. The United Nations saw this and selected the local organisation to join their Decade of Ecosystem Restoration.
Ecosystem restoration means assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed, as well as conserving the ecosystems that are still intact. All kinds of natural as well as human-made ecosystems can be restored, including forests, farmlands, cities, wetlands and oceans.
The primary aim of the Decade, which runs from 2021 – 2030, is to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems worldwide. In addition, the Decade aims to inspire and support organisations, communities and individuals to collaborate and develop the appropriate skill sets for catalysing and successfully implementing restoration initiatives across the world.
At this year’s Reforest Fest, with the help of festival-goers and donors, the organisation was able to plant a total of 5064 trees. This boosts the goals set for the 2030 reforestation project.
“The tree planting began, there was much digging, much mulching, many dirty fingernails, and a whole ton of getting active, not anxious for the environment. Spirits were kept high as live music was played, songs were sung and drums echoed around the planting site.” – Greenpop
