A massive beach clean-up led by young activist Zoë Prinsloo has set down its final flag, completing the Coast to Coast mission across South Africa that began in May. Everyone who joined in helped clean an elephant’s weight in litter!
Milnerton, South Africa (01 August, 2023) — Earlier this year 21-year-old activist Zoë Prinsloo set out to travel South Africa from coast to coast with a noble clean-up itinerary.
An excursion 5 years in the making, mission Coast to Coast promised to leave every beach they got to closer to its natural state—something Zoë’s organisation Save a Fishie stands on the hill advocating for, as we all should.
For adventure’s fearless leader Zoë, the big mission is the realisation of a passion she’s had since childhood. She’s been a coastal cleanup champ since she was 10, founded Save a Fishie, and has completed over 100 beach cleanups over half her life.
The Coast to Coast Adventure
Beginning in May along the West Coast, Save a Fishie took anyone interested along their journey to the East Coast and back West; documenting their finds of the day (like relic Coca-Cola bottles from the 90s) as well as how much they’d cleaned up in weight.
By the time the mission reached its halfway mark in late June, 1.5 tonnes of litter had already been removed!
Throughout the experience, multiple communities have seen first-hand how big of an impact a little effort can make, from Big Bay to P.E’s Hobey Beach and all the beaches in between.
Now that the adventure has come to an end at Milnerton Lagoon (Zoë’s self-proclaimed adopted beach), the team has shared just how much they got done:
- In total, 7895 kms were travelled
- 2,962 kgs of rubbish was collected (the weight of some female elephants)
- 111 beaches were cleaned
This adventure understood the assignment, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for Zoë and Save a Fishie’s friends.
