The team will keep doing what they do best, opening their doors. But now, they need the community to help.

Stellenbosch, South Africa (31 August 2025) – At the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS), the doors have never stopped opening. Every week, more dogs arrive and are welcomed with open arms. Some rescued from the streets, some abandoned, others surrendered by owners who simply can’t provide for them anymore.

They are known for never turning away an animal in need, and they’ve earned their reputation. In 2023, they were named the Best Animal Non-Profit Shelter of the year.

Unconditional love.

Now, those same open doors have led to a new challenge. The kennels are full, resources stretched too far, and there’s no more space left to give the animals the time and care they really deserve.

In August alone, more than 60 dogs came into AWSS’s care. Some of the new arrivals are shy and unsure, some playful and full of beans, others still learning to trust. Each one is deserving of a safe space and a loving family to call their own.

The team has now sent out an appeal to the Stellenbosch community to step in. Adoption is the ultimate gift, but fostering, even for a few weeks, can be just as great a help. Even just sharing this story will be a great help for the shelter. Getting the word out.

Every rescue placed in a home opens up space for the next vulnerable soul that comes through the gate.

“We are turning to our community – the compassionate, loyal supporters who have carried us through so many storms – and asking, with everything we have…” the AWSS pleads.

They have seen the amazing power of community before. Time and again, supporters in Stellenbosch have come forward to walk dogs, donate food, or share posts that connect pets with new families. This is another chance to make a move to make sure no rescue is left behind.

A decision made today could be the difference between a dog waiting in an overcrowded kennel, and a dog curled up on a couch.

Every pooch deserves a happy ending.

You can visit AWSS on Devon Valley Road in Stellenbosch any day of the week between 10am and 3pm, or contact them directly on 060 645 1715.

A Brother and sister team that is really making a difference.
Perhaps goodthingsguy can do a story on them?
