Gypsy is back home and happy after a scary 16-day stint away from home!

Jeffreys Bay, South Africa (15 August 2025) – Sometimes, a lost dog brings out the very best in a community. That was definitely true for Gypsy, who went missing in Jeffreys Bay for sixteen long days.

Gypsy vanished in late July, when he hopped off the back of his family’s bakkie unnoticed.

From that moment, his mom and dad didn’t stop searching. Neither did the rest of the community, who got involved. All across JBay, people came together – neighbours, friends, security companies, even strangers, to help find Gypsy.

Posters went up, search parties combed the area, and tips came in from all corners of town. At one point, someone said they had seen him near the Shell garage, but no luck came from that. Even when the days dragged on, they kept hope going.

The breakthrough happened on the night of 12 August, thanks to a neighbour who had informed the family that they had been hearing distant howling for days.

Finally, a flash of hope.

Tyler and Danell, Gypsy’s owners, went to investigate, armed with Gypsy’s favourite whistle and their other dog for good luck.

When they called Gypsy’s name, they finally heard a faint reply.

Gypsy was found nearly three metres down a manhole, tired and stuck, but still hanging on. Despite sightings of him, it had appeared that he spent most of his time stuck there and crying out for help.

In a flurry of relief and adrenaline, Tyler and Danell managed to pull him out and rushed him to the vet.

Dehydrated and thinner, Gypsy still managed a tail wag. Proof that everything was going to be okay.

Over those two weeks when he went missing, overwhelming support poured in from all directions: neighbourhood watch, security teams, and plenty of animal lovers who didn’t even know Gypsy but wanted to help.

Later, Tyler and Danell shared a message for the community via JBay Online News, which shared their story.

“Follow every single lead. Have faith. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. We will never forget the love shown to us and to our boy. Thank you to everyone who stood by us, prayed, searched, donated, and cared. You brought our boy home.”

Gypsy is now back where he belongs, resting, eating well, and soaking up all the care he missed.
