CLAW has continued to play an instrumental role in working with the baboon population in Northern Johannesburg; they are once again tracking a male on the loose.
Ontdekkerspark, South Africa (01 March 2023) – It seems that every two years, the West Rand and Northern Johannesburg have a male baboon that makes its way through the suburbs in search of a new home. We have reported in both 2019 and 2021 of roaming baboons and CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare) has always stepped in to aid the creature.
Now in 2023, CLAW has asked the public once again, to assist in spotting the roaming baboon, so it can be relocated to a safer, unpopulated location. The baboon is currently wandering through Ondekkerspark in the West Rand.
The baboon will have come from a local troop. Once male baboons reach maturity, they are pushed out of their troop and have to find a new one. According to Cora Bailey, the founder of CLAW, this is done to prevent inbreeding within the troop.
CLAW needs help to locate the baboon and is calling on public to report accurate information regarding sightings so they can narrow down exactly where the baboon is.
“In all the years that we have (mostly) successfully trapped and relocated these animals, we have never had an incident where any human or animal has been attacked
The Baboon will do his utmost to avoid conflict
Our trap is huge, and cannot easily be offloaded and positioned at each home or pavement where he is seen
In short, we are doing what we can to get him to safety, and kindly request that he is not chased or shot
There is a WhatsApp group for sightings, where we request time of sighting and location (with a đ of possible)” – Cora Bailey
By narrowing down the location, CLAW will be better able to place the trap and hopefully catch him.
CLAW is asking that any sightings of the baboon be sent via the dedicated WhatsApp group. You can join that here.
