Critter Rescue SA is working on more than doubling the festive spirit this year, aiming to feed 5000 animals a lekker Christmas lunch!

Pretoria, South Africa (26 August 2025) – Every year, Critter Rescue SA makes Christmas lunch happen for shelter animals at organisations across Gauteng.

It’s a massive gesture of love made possible by genuine people who know that animals deserve some Christmas joy too. Especially in December, which is often the loneliest time of year at shelters, with fewer hands on board.

Their 2024 Christmas Lunch run was a big success that fed over 2,000 shelter animals!

True to its name, Critter Rescue SA itself focuses on smaller creatures that often fall through the cracks of animal welfare efforts (rabbits, hedgehogs and other tiny creatures). Throughout the merry season though, they make the time to ensure that even bigger friends like neglected and rescued dogs also have a reason to wag their tails.

In a mission to ensure they reach as many happy tails as possible, the organisation shares buckets of meals with different charities across Gauteng.

Support over the years has grown and they’ve been able to grow the number of animals they reach with a Christmas lunch. In 2023, six organisations were treated to the festive buckets, and in 2024, that number grew to 16 organisations.

Now, the team are getting a head start on their 7th Christmas Lunch initiative, aiming to fill 125 buckets for 5000 animals.

Their goal for now, is to reach at least 100 buckets by the end of August. Currently, they’re sitting on 85.

The shelters that will benefit this Christmas include Benoni, Boksburg, Germiston, Nigel and Springs SPCAs, as well as organisations like Husky Heaven, Border Collie Rescue, Paws R Us, Tiny Paws Rescue, The Animal Guardians (TAG), CLAW, PETS JHB, and Sunny’s Pet Outreach Team, among others.

Sponsoring a bucket is a great way to rope together with friends, colleagues, or family and do something special for rescued, vulnerable souls.

Buckets (which feed multiple animals) are R350 to sponsor.
