They’re on a mission to make their last effort for shelter animals a big one.

Pretoria, South Africa (11 September 2025) – For seven years, Critter Rescue SA has made Christmas extra special for shelter animals across Gauteng.

Their annual Christmas Lunch feed has grown from supporting just a handful of organisations to reaching thousands of animals across the province, proving each time that our four-legged friends deserve a little festive cheer too.

This year will be the most meaningful one yet.

The rescue has sadly announced that it will be closing its doors at the end of December, making this 2025 Christmas Lunch their last. The unfortunate news hasn’t stopped their mission to make it their biggest and best run ever. They’re aiming to feed 5000 shelter animals through 125 festive buckets.

Each bucket, which costs R350, provides a generous meal shared among shelter animals.

The buckets are distributed to a wide network of SPCAs and rescue organisations, including Benoni, Boksburg, Springs, Nigel and Germiston SPCAs, along with groups such as Paws R Us, Husky Heaven, Border Collie Rescue, and so many others.

Support has already carried them really far, but there’s still a final stretch to go. The team needs just 15 more buckets sponsored to reach their target.

“The 2025 Christmas lunches will be our last. Please help us reach our target so that we can make it the best one ever.”

Alongside donations, Critter Rescue SA is also inviting volunteers to help cook and serve at various shelters this December. All ingredients will be supplied, volunteers need only to show up and stir the pot.

One last thing. Before they close their doors, the rescue shelter still needs to home many vulnerable souls in its care currently (rabbits, hedgehogs and other tiny creatures). If you’ve got space for a new family member, please consider them.

Details about how to help are all shared below.
