After more than four decades in captivity, Duma the elephant is finally experiencing life as nature intended, rediscovering freedom and connection at Shambala Game Reserve.
Limpopo, South Africa (04 September 2025) – A year ago, a quiet and historic moment unfolded in the Limpopo veld. After more than 40 years in captivity at the Pretoria Zoo, Duma (formerly known as Charlie), the elephant, finally stepped into freedom at Shambala Game Reserve in the Waterberg mountains.
For decades, his world was confined by walls and the constant sounds of the city. Arrival at Shambala changed everything. Surrounded by the bushveld, grass scent and dust, Duma finally reconnected with his own kind.
Just within days of settling into his rehabilitation boma, he embraced the joy of mud baths, rolling and splashing in ways he had never been able to before. He explored, pushed over trees, and began foraging. This marked an extraordinary milestone of freedom.
Six weeks later, Duma’s world expanded further when he was released into a 26-hectare area. Here, he roamed among rivers, woodlands, and wild companions. The change was profound. Gone were the strict routines of zoo life, replaced by the rhythms of the wild and the freedom to choose his own path.
Every step of his journey has been supported by a dedicated team of elephant specialists. Daily monitoring, supplementary feeding, and regular veterinary care have ensured that Duma grows stronger, both physically and emotionally. His skin has improved thanks to daily mud baths, his body is visibly more robust, and his relaxed behaviour reflects a deep sense of contentment.
The future holds even greater promise. Preparations are underway to expand his range to a 200-hectare space that links directly to the greater Shambala Reserve. This next stage could allow him to meet and integrate with elephants who have always lived free.
From a life of confinement to a journey of rediscovery, he stands as a symbol for countless other captive elephants.
The Rekord shared a beautiful video of Duma enjoying his freedom, and our hearts are full!
