Things are happening in Durban! An inspiring video captured numerous citizens actively playing their part to upkeep the CBD by picking up waste and sweeping the streets, tackling spots that often quickly succumb to litter.
Durban, South Africa (03 November 2025) – The people of Durban are taking ownership of their city, and man, is it quite the sight to witness!
The upkeep of the Durban CBD is mostly maintained by hardworking members of the City, whose routine includes collecting litter and waste left behind on busy streets, removing illegal posters, and cleaning public spaces. However, citizens have now joined these efforts because Durban will only improve with real change, and real change starts with a shift in mindset and citizens who are willing to make a difference.
A video shared by Kendal Coward shows several community members getting stuck in as they pick up litter and sweep Albert Park, a historic landmark undergoing revitalisation after periods of decline, as well as other common streets that would otherwise be overwhelmed by scattered litter before the end of any given day.
“Things are happening in Durban, changing the narrative. We’re on the up come,” said Kendal, who thanked the community members for playing their part in looking after their city.
Footage of this active stewardship was well received and appreciated by many social media users, with some noting that this the clean-up activity was a drive towards grooming a culture of cleanliness, self-love and community participation.
One person also commented on the improvement of the coastal city’s CBD, saying:
“Haven’t been to Durban in years, but I was in Durban two days ago and must admit I am pleasantly surprised by the positive changes that I noticed. Clean main beach, old run-down buildings being renovated and painted, and it seems that the vagrants have been moved somewhere else. Well done, Durban. By standing together and working hard, you can be the number one tourist destination again. Keep up the good work.”
The positive change is already noticeable, and it just goes to show that this renewed civic pride and collective responsibility are paving the way for Durban to reclaim its status as a top destination.
