A clever social experiment dubbed ‘Homes Need Pets’ is changing how people see adoptable animals; shifting them from ‘charity cases’ to the best addition for a new home!
Gauteng, South Africa (08 December 2024) — It’s funny how powerful a simple narrative shift is. When a sentence goes from ‘pets need homes’ to ‘homes need pets’, suddenly, the pets in question are shifted from being seen as charity cases to something that’s far more true. The shift sees them become additions of immense value to any home, any life and any family. The shift sees them as they actually are—what makes a house a home.
Recently, the Gauteng-based Woodrock Animal Rescue decided to put this narrative shift to the test through a social experiment dubbed ‘Homes Need Pets’.
In the campaign, adoptable (and adorable) pets were carefully paired with real properties on a local realtor’s website. Their photos were photoshopped into the property’s photos and videos and accompanied by biographies that highlighted how the pets’ characteristics complimented the home.
In one video’s house tour, the filming even takes place from an animal’s perspective a few inches off the ground; as if a new pet were inspecting the home themselves. This way, we are led to imagine our homes from our new family members’ eyes right off the bat.
It wasn’t just a clever way to showcase that a house only becomes a home by virtue of those who live inside it. It was equally a way to shift power back to the animals, reminding those perusing the property pages that adopting an animal isn’t just ‘doing a good deed’; it’s installing more love into your life.

About Woodrock Animal Rescue
A leading pro-life non-profit animal rescue centre originated in the suburban area of Woodmead and Khyber Rock (hence their name), but you can now find them on an 8.5-hectare plot in the gorgeous Hennops River Valley just southwest of Pretoria.
The organisation has worked very hard since its founding in 1992 to rehome as many animals as possible, with around 500 animals in their care at any given time, from pigs to dogs and donkeys!
Woodrock Animal Rescue assists homeless, abused, neglected, stray, injured, ill, geriatric, and unwanted animals that would otherwise have miserable lives and premature deaths – animals who have no voice of their own.
Whether you’re in the market for a new home or simply need a new set of paws to complete your home, you can check out Woodrock’s adoption page here.
