The Cape of Good Hope SPCA do some incredible things even with limited funding, like recently, they rescued a horse from a canal, and it is doing well.
Cape Town, South Africa – As many of you will know, the NSPCA had its funding pulled by The National Lottery. The National Lottery was a big funder to the organisation, and with that gone, the various SPCA branches have been left to raise their funds.
Despite the drop in funding, SPCA branches have continued to do good in their neighbourhoods. The Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) recently saved a little stallion that found himself in quite a bit of trouble.
He had been trapped in a stormwater canal for two days. The CoGH SPCA Horse Care Unit was notified about the horse in the early hours of Monday morning and immediately set off to Surrey Estate to help the scared animal.
They were working in total darkness and had to postpone the rescue until the sun was out. Lindsay Willis, the Horse Care Unit manager, had her team working with the Gugulethu Fire and Rescue team to make the rescue possible. Community members also joined in to assist with the rescue efforts.
“With a lack of sufficient light, combined with a stressed animal, the risk of him slipping was far too high and we couldn’t take this chance.
The second rescue attempt, made possible with the assistance of some compassionate community members saw the newly christened Awa (meaning ‘canal’ in Maori) successfully lifted out of the canal at first light.”
Awa and his friend Suez had been grazing near the canal when Awa slipped in. Suez had been so distressed he stayed nearby Awa for the full two days until the rescue took place.
Both horses were taken to the SPCA Horse Care Unit where they are receiving lots of love, fresh food and veterinary care.
“A huge thanks to the kind members of the community who treated our hard-working staff to coffee in the early hours of the rescue – a very special moment for our team.”
