Honorary Rangers started the year off strong with a successful snare-removal mission in Bushveld that saw them get rid of multiple nasty snare traps!
Bushveld, South Africa (06 February 2025) — SANParks Honorary Rangers have started the year by hitting the ground running thanks to a snare-removal mission undertaken by honorary rangers from the Bushveld Region!
It was a bad day to be a snare trap as the team arrived on the scene ready to embark on their first Snare Removal Duty for 2025.
Armed with a passion for protecting the wildlife that these traps harm and with support from Work-Integrated learners studying the field of Nature Conservation as well as a ranger ready to rock, the team got to work.
Snare traps are essentially nooses. They are made from wire, cable or similar materials and are placed to trap animals—something they’re unfortunately good at doing due to the fact that they are easily camouflaged.
But conservationists and rangers across South Africa continue to fight back on behalf of wildlife. Thanks to honorary rangers across the country, multiple snare removals happen year-round, a feat that otherwise wouldn’t be possible without the manpower of these volunteers.
A volunteer-based programme for those passionate about the environment and wildlife, the Honorary Rangers are individuals who lend traditional rangers a helping hand. They are champions of wildlife education, safeguarding wildlife and trail restoration amid much more, all of which they do via their own time and volition.
The Bushveld lot successfully removed 39 snare traps together, a job well done to all involved.
Those looking to join the thousands of honorary rangers on their mission to preserve our natural heritage happen to be in luck because the Table Mountain National Park chapter is looking for more volunteers!
