The Living Landscapes project is finally launching in Johannesburg, where it will uplift urban spaces with green makeovers.
Johannesburg, South Africa (02 April 2025) — For the past fourteen years, the Living Landscapes Urban Greening project by environmental conservation organisation, Greenpop, has been behind some communities’ most treasured green makeovers in Cape Town. 450 greening days later, and the project is finally launching in Johannesburg!
The Living Landscapes Project is a Greenpop-led effort that’s focused on connecting urban communities through green spaces. It helps strengthen biodiversity in areas that need this kind of boost, supports city-based communities in becoming stronger through the shared act of caring for their newfound ecosystems, and helps people learn more about the environment.
“This initiative will not only improve air quality and biodiversity but will also create spaces where people can connect, learn, and thrive,” says Chris Nash, the Head of Restoration at Greenpop. “There is no better common ground than the ground beneath our feet.”
Thanks to Living Landscapes, spaces have been transformed to have indigenous gardens, new trees and community gardens as well as nurseries.
A recent urban-greening project saw the Helderberg Hospital parking lot get some green TLC.
Gather Your Green-thumbed Friends and Better a Space
If you’re intrigued by the initiative and wish to be a part of it, there are different ways to get involved. You can either book a garden day with Greenpop for a greening experience at either an ongoing site in Cape Town or the Johannesburg chapter; perfect for green-thumbed friends, colleagues, schools or simply people who want to be a part of something unique and impactful.
Alternatively, you can also look into ‘donating a garden’ by contributing to the Living Landscapes Project!
