Mr. Marasi set out on foot with his beloved doggy, Lewy, safely tucked into a wheelbarrow to get her the care she needed.
Philippi, Cape Flats (05 September 2025) – We’ve seen it happen time and time again. Even the most vulnerable in our country are willing to do anything it takes to look out for their pets. It’s an aspect of South Africans that we are unendingly proud of.
We’ve seen cats turn up for animal welfare in toolboxes-tuned-carriers, puppies arrive for care in bags, and dogs turn up beside their owners on bicycles.
This week, we saw it again when the kind-hearted Mr. Marasi walked kilometres across Philippi with his beloved dog, Lewy, in a wheelbarrow. He made his way to the Animal Welfare Society of SA, where Lewy would receive some much-needed care from veterinary professionals.
Mr. Marasi arrived at the animal hospital with Lewy comfortably tucked into her makeshift carrier on wheels.
“The moment he arrived and greeted our team, he kept saying with a smile: ‘Sy is baie stout’ (‘She is very naughty’),” shares the team.
Despite her cheeky nature, Mr Marasi was determined to do the right thing for her, bringing her in to be sterilised and prevent unwanted litters. Thanks to the generosity of strangers who care, he was able to get her this help without needing to pay a cent.
“When he asked how much it would cost, we were able to say: ‘Nothing – it’s free’,” says the team, who with the wonderful support of Dancers LOVE Dogs, were able to go above and beyond for Lewy.
Lewy was admitted on the spot for sterilisation, vaccination, and microchipping. She’ll also receive Nexgard, deworming, and go home with food.
Mr Marasi will be heading back to the hospital, wheelbarrow in tow, on Saturday to pick Lewy up again. The Animal Welfare Society of SA wants to pay the kindness forward. They’re encouraging their supporters to donate anything towards him and his family, should they wish to do so.
