We’re really such a resourceful bunch…
Johannesburg, South Africa (27 August 2025) – South Africans have a special, unmatched ability to improvise when it matters, especially when it comes to animals!
One family recently proved it. We loved the creativity and care they put into safely transporting a cat…
In a Facebook post that we recently caught wind of, CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare) shared how the local family needed to bring their cat in, but had no pet carrier.
Instead of panicking or risking the animal’s safety by resorting to a cardboard box and calling it a day, they got creative.
They repurposed an old toolbox into a comfy make-shift cat carrier, with ventilation holes and all. It was clean, secure, and just the right size for a cat.
Someone put a lot of love into making it look and feel just like the real deal. Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of out-of-the-box thinking.
“You have to appreciate the effort of this family… They didn’t have a traditional cat carrier, so they converted their old toolbox into a carrier,” wrote CLAW. “It worked perfectly to bring their little cat to our clinic.”
Commenters supported the family’s valiant efforts, and others even offered up their spare carriers. A small example of how tiny acts of kindness inspire more of the same.
It’s not the first time the CLAW clinic has seen a loving family bring their companions into the clinic in unconventional manners.
As the team works to treat animals often coming from the most destitute areas across the city, where owners who have very little will do anything it takes to get their pets the care they need, they’ve seen some remarkable deliveries.
In the past, a puppy with a large tick on her back was brought to the vet in a wheelchair by a worried group of kids who made quite the dramatic entrance for a pup who could walk just fine. Still, they cared enough to bring her there safely and were dubbed the ‘wheelchair ambulance’.
In another story, a pup was brought to the vet by his loving owner, who walked a great distance, making sure his puppy was comfortable in any way that he could. Even if it meant ensuring his companion didn’t have to walk by carrying him there in a plastic bag.
On another occasion, an owner, whose dog had been viciously attacked, hauled several kilometres across the city on a bicycle with his dog safely in a crate behind him.
It’s beautiful how even those who struggle bitterly will do anything in their power to save their furry companions. They would walk a thousand miles and then some more.
