In the wake of devastating floods in the Western Cape, which have left Khayelitsha’s vulnerable dogs stranded and cats soaked, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic’s disaster management team has risen as true community heroes, bravely navigating the storm and disaster.
Khayelitsha, South Africa (27 June 2025) – The weather woes in the Western Cape continue to wreak havoc. Torrential rains have flooded Khayelitsha, leaving homes knee-deep in water and countless animals shivering, soaked, and scared.
But not all hope is lost. The Mdzananda Animal Clinic’s Disaster Management Team has been one of the many community helpers and heroes that have been out in the storm, going door to door to rescue pets in distress.
“We’ve found dogs stranded and chained in the rain, cats hiding and soaked, and families trying their best to protect their animals,” Mdzananda Animal Clinic said.
Beyond immediate rescue, the team has been hard at work to assist within their means by distributing food, blankets, and kennels where the need is great.
The Mdzananda Animal Clinic is a veterinary council-registered, nonprofit organisation animal clinic that treats over 1,500 pets per month in Khayelitsha. It was inspired by a community hero named Joe from Khayelitsha, who wanted to help his neighbours by bathing and feeding community pets with just a trolley and a water bucket.
The animal clinic strives to see a community that cares for every animal, be it a pet, a neighbour’s pet, a stray or a farm animal.
As part of its continued efforts to foster a community that cares for animals, the organisation is appealing for support in this challenging time.
