“Life in the Mother City and surrounding Winelands doesn’t just feel pre-pandemic normal, it feels positively revamped and recharged.”

Western Cape, South Africa (11 May 2022) – The Mother City of South Africa has been ranked as the third greatest city on earth by ‘The Telegraph Travel’.

The Mother City took a podium position primarily because of its sensational topography and geography. It was the only African city to make the list.

Barcelona was named the “greatest city on Earth” by the British newspaper, Sydney, Cape Town, Lisbon and Venice followed, while Los Angeles, Dubai, London, Vancouver and Florence were also in the top ten.

Why ‘The Telegraph’ named Cape Town as the greatest city in the world to visit right now?

“South Africa’s most southerly city is often ranked as Telegraph readers’ favourite, and you clearly have excellent taste. The city’s topography and geography, alone, make Cape Town stand out above the others. Its sweeping beach, copious sunshine hours and towering Table Mountain bumped the city up the table, the latter providing the highest view and the biggest green space (22,100 hectares) out of any city in the list. Without its poor safety record (there is no city in our list with a higher homicide rate), Cape Town would have grabbed the top spot.”

“You really can’t overstate the case for visiting Cape Town. With its excellent art galleries, hip bars, world-rated restaurants, and design-savvy shops, this pulsating city will leave you hungry for more,” Pippa De Bruyn, Telegraph Destination Expert explains.

And with over 16 million readers from around the world, the accolade is really good news for our tourism industry!

And the City of Cape Town is beyond proud to hear about the ranking.

Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth at the City of Cape Town says: “It’s accolades like this that really bring home just how special our city is! They firmly entrench what we all know: Cape Town is a best-in-class destination that offers unparalleled beauty, culture, and creativity. We’ve seen a positive increase in visitor recovery numbers – international and domestic arrivals – over the last few months. This positive news is the result of targeted and effective campaigns and strategies implemented by the City and Cape Town Tourism that capture the variety of our destination and we will continue working hard to ensure we reach greater heights. We’re sure this will be a wonderful catalyst to continue this trajectory.”

Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism confirmed that they have been working hard behind the scenes to make sure these numbers increase.

“We’ve been working hard to play our part in this as well. Our recently launched Find Your Freedom Travel Experience is a choice-driven, immersive travel experience that lets visitors virtually explore Cape Town, their way. Players choose their persona – the Fearless Foodie, Nature Warrior or Urban Adventure – and are taken down a rabbit-hole of rapid videos showcasing the best Mother City offerings linked to their interests. We’ve seen a tremendously positive response to the experience so far, with many people going on to book their bucket-list trips through Expedia, which has a host of Find Your Freedom-linked deals.

We are extremely proud of yes another global accolade. To us, it’s the greatest city on earth and the perfect place to Find Your Freedom.”

Simon Parker – a travel writer wrote an incredible article on ‘Why Cape Town is the greatest city in the world to visit right now‘ for The Telegraph.

“Life in the Mother City and surrounding Winelands doesn’t just feel pre-pandemic normal, it feels positively revamped and recharged.”
