The Rhino Orphanage is celebrating the birth of Mrembo, born to Kaytie, a rescued rhino orphan who was raised at the orphanage before being released into the wild.

Undisclosed Location, South Africa (16 January 2024) – Mrembo, meaning “beautiful girl” in Swahili, was welcomed into the world this month. Her arrival marks yet another important moment in time when a rhino orphan is saved, raised and released back into the wild, where they then bring the next generation of rhinos into the world.

Rhino orphan Kaytie was rescued as a calf and raised at the orphanage before being released. She is the third rhino from the orphanage to give birth in the wild.

The Rhino Orphanage has slowly been releasing its mature orphans and many are now old enough to start reproducing. We are seeing more stories like this regularly and it is truly warming our hearts! The team shared the happy update of a new calf being welcomed into the world recently.

They indicated that they had no clue that Kaytie was even pregnant so this was well and truly a surprise for all. They went to investigate after Kaytie’s partner, Lacy, was seen alone and panicked. When they finally found Kaytie, they understood why Lacy was alone.

“Orphan Kaytie has given birth to the tiniest, most beautiful little girl just 5 days into the new year!!!

Our team was beyond shocked with the discovery of two teeny, weeny little ears in the grass behind Kaytie after finding her best friend Lacy alone and panicky.

Allthough the bond between orphans are strong, Kaytie doesn’t tolerate any other rhinos close to her and her little one. Kaytie hid her pregnancy well, no signs even a day before the birth, never an indication of mating with a bull. But baby is doing exceptionally well and drinking like the little champ she is.”

Mrembo is already stealing the hearts of her monitors and bringing smiles to the supporters of the orphanage. The Rhino Orphanage will continue to share updates so stay tuned to their social media here.
