Olly the Ostrich attempted to be the exception to the rule when he seemingly attempted to fly off a cliff. Luckily for this ostrich, he made it through his ambitious tumble without too much trouble.
Prince Albert, South Africa (06 December 2024) — We’re often told we should reach for the stars, spread our wings and go after our wildest dreams. But sometimes, it serves us well to know our limits—a lesson one Olly the Ostrich recently learnt the hard way.
Olly the Ostrich had a problem. He really wanted to get down to a valley that lay beneath a cliff. As most of us (pardon Olly himself) know, ostriches aren’t exactly known for their flight skills. But it seems that Olly was determined to become the exception to the rule after he decided to launch himself off the cliff with dangerous ambition.
The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary recounted Olly’s woe and shared how they helped him get back on his feet.
“We had to carry 140kg’s Olly all the way down the mountain as he had lost mobility in both his legs from the fall,” the team shared.
“Poor lad clearly didn’t get the memo that ostriches can’t fly.”
The team made Olly his very own sling to help him recover—a unique kit that would help circulation return to his poor legs. Thankfully, and to the relief of his carers, after some careful monitoring, Olly was reported to have no broken bones and is said to be back on his feat once again.
Although the gift of flight may not have been on his side this time, luck certainly was.

Meanwhile, in other news where animals beat out cliff trouble; near Herolds Bay, Lulu the Border Collie also endured a nasty fall after chasing a few birds didn’t quite go as planned. Lulu ended up stranded around 50 to 70 metres down to the water’s edge, facing a shoreline of rocks. But luck was also on her side after a team of lifeguards managed to locate her before it got too dark, bringing her back to safety with a heck of a story to bark about!
