Parts of Soweto got an early spring clean thanks to 60 volunteers on a mission to remind communities that a clean area is a proud area:
Soweto, South Africa (11 August 2024) — Last weekend, parts of Soweto got an early spring clean thanks to 60 volunteers on a mission to ignite a sense of pride and responsibility in the community.
The big clean-up helped transform Chris Hand Road, Baragwanath Hospital and Bara Taxi rank in Soweto, where streets were swept, litter was removed, and illegally dumped trash got kicked to the curb (read: disposed of responsibly).
This, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Ward Council 26 of Diepkloof and the young adult worker volunteers part of ASEZ WAO, a global organisation that has been very busy in South Africa as of late—taking on hugely helpful tasks like planting fresh fruit and olive trees for communities and giving Jozi parks well-deserved makeovers.
“The act of volunteering shows how much a person loves their community and country. The fact that ASEZ WAO is doing this volunteer clean up campaign is proof that they love the community of Diepkloof. We need constant volunteers to take care of the environment, not only from this group but from the local residents too, so that the amount of littering may reduce, since the residents take care of their community,” reflected Ward 26 Councillor Sithembiso Mashinini.
The early spring clean was not only an act for the environment’s betterment, but a way to help reduce criminal activities in the are.
“A place that is dirty and which no one cares about is filled with criminal activities,” the organisation says. “A place where people take care of the environment is always clean [is] where criminals are less prevalent. And if the young adults are the ones in the forefront of this kind of action for the environment, ASEZ WAO believes that the future of each country and community will be filled with joy and happiness.”
