Pasta Straws

A bar in the UK did away with plastic straws but struggled to find a useful alternative. That was until they discovered Pasta Straws!

Plastic Straw alternatives are all anyone is talking about these days. This is because plastic straws have become such a massive problem for the environment, changes need to be made.

Did you know, in America, nearly half a billion straws are used daily… How flippin’ crazy is that number? It doesn’t sit right with us which is why we got metal straws in the office, to stop being a part of the problem.

It is easy to say, “oh, but it’s just one straw” when out and about, but if every person said that, we would have billions upon billions of single-use straws just floating around, which we already do. They say that in the next 3 decades, there will be more straws in the ocean than fish… Another scary snippet of info.

So this has all led to people actively making changes in their personal lives as well as at restaurants and the likes. Saying no to the plastic straw is becoming an empowering statement. We really have the power to drive change, one straw at a time no less!

There is a bar in the UK that did away with plastic straws and implemented paper ones. Being a cocktail bar, their customers complained about how the straws went mushy after a while. They considered metal straws but the price is unrealistic. They looked at biodegradable straws but were not happy with the “lifespan” estimations so the got creative.

The bar brought in pasta straws. Now, before all the gluten-free readers stand up in arms, the gluten cannot harm you if you don’t ingest it. As John Green wrote in ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, Augustus’s cigarette habit was a metaphor.

“It’s a metaphor, see: You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don’t give it the power to do its killing.”

We know cigarettes and gluten are very different, but the analogy still works. Obviously, for people allergic to gluten, it is a different story. The bar even discourages the use of pasta straws in this case.

The bar is called Brace and Browns and can be found on Whiteladies Road, for our UK readers. For our South African readers, many restaurants and cafes have ditched the straw. These are some of the places we know about.

If we have missed any, let us know in the comment section. Also if you do accidentally use a straw, take it home and place it inside a 2-litre coke bottle, this can be the start of your very first eco-brick.
