If you are a lover of oat milk (or the regular kind) you can now keep on saving the planet by adding your cartons to the recycling bin.

South Africa (14 May 2023) – Liquid board cartons, typically the type that stores dairy and juice products long term, are in fact, recyclable. The NPC Petco wants the public to know they are recyclable so they don’t accidentally end up in landfill.

In a recent newsletter, they shared what to do with the cartons to get them sorted for recycling.

“Like PET bottles, liquid board cartons are used for a wide variety of products – you probably have some in your fridge right now! These cartons are multi-layered, plastic-lined cartons that are used to package milk, fruit juice and custard – and the good news is that they’re entirely recyclable.

When you collect and recycle your used liquid board cartons along with your other recyclables, you do the world a service. You keep valuable materials out of landfills – and you assist South Africa’s 90,000-plus waste collectors to feed their families. You also assist in supporting the formal recycling sector that makes recycling possible – the buy-back centres and recyclers who buy, sort and convert the recyclable materials we toss out”

How can you collect and recycle your liquid board cartons?

1. Save any used juice, long-life milk or custard cartons

2. Rinse them and put them aside with any other recyclables for collection

3. For cartons with straws or caps, help reduce litter by pushing the straw back into the pack or reattaching the cap before you recycle it (this ensures the straw or cap can be recycled with the carton)

4. You can take the recyclables to a recycling buy-back centre or drop-off site near you, or put them on the kerb for waste collectors on collection day. You can also sign up for a local recycling collection service.
