The Cape Parrot and the magnificent forests they call home desperately need our support. This national treasure, like many unique species, is facing an uphill battle for survival.
South Africa (30 May 2025) – The Cape Parrot is South Africa’s only endemic parrot and Africa’s most endangered. World Parrot Day, observed on May 31, offers a unique opportunity to appreciate and promote the conservation of this stunning feathered creature.
Dressed in green and gold, this intelligent bird is as striking as it is rare, with fewer than 2,000 left in the wild.
As a flagship species, protecting the Cape Parrot means protecting the indigenous forests it depends on—and the many other species that call those forests home.
The Cape Parrot Project (CPP), powered by the Wild Bird Trust (WBT), is working with communities, researchers, and partners to restore these forests and secure a future for this remarkable bird.
In reality, these efforts involve spreading awareness, analysing trends and threats to forest health, growing indigenous seedlings in nurseries, managing invasive vegetation, and planting trees. Additionally, they offer employment and education while engaging local people in conservation.
The project also collaborates with schools in nearby communities for educational initiatives, encouraging children to become agents of positive environmental change and fostering appreciation for the indigenous forests and the diverse species that inhabit them.
As part of fuelling their continued efforts to protect this iconic symbol of South Africa’s natural heritage, the CCP has a crowdfunding campaign on GivenGain to raise funds to save the endangered Cape Parrot and its habitat.
