One brave little chap is making great strides on his road to recovery after being attacked and severely injured by a pack of hyenas who left him with break injuries to his back leg and badly infected wounds. However, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary’s dedicated team, the little rhino is making remarkable progress.

Mpumalanga, South Africa (13 November 2024) – A courageous little rhino calf is defying the odds after a brutal attack by hyenas. Despite suffering severe injuries, this brave young creature is receiving world-class care at the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary.

The poor guy, currently kept in the Intensive Care Unit, suffered life-threatening injuries despite his mom’s efforts to fight off the aggressive hyenas. The calf suffered a break and crush injuries to his back leg, as well as heavily infected wounds to his legs, ears, and face.

It has been a few weeks since his admission and the rhino sanctuary’s fantastic team of veterinary and medical professionals, Petronel and the caregivers are doing everything they can to save this little one’s life.

The team, who has remarkably gained the trust of the calf, has been working day and night to support the rhino calf by frequently changing his dressings, bandages and cleaning and redressing his wounds without immobilisation.

“Our veterinary team are also able to draw blood samples to monitor his organ function and infection levels.

“He has grown very trusting of the caregivers and the milk helps calm him and serves as a positive reinforcement. This is very important as his road to recovery will take time,” Care for Wild Rhino said.

We’re so excited to see this little guy make a full recovery and get back to roaming the wild. Heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who has donated to his care and has played a vital part in giving him a fighting chance.
