Sunnyside Park is beaming brighter than ever thanks to a new, community-led and focused makeover that boasts everything from an upgraded jungle gym to new trees and even dog park enhancements!

Edgemead, South Africa (03 February 2025) — It’s a fantastic start to the new year for Sunnyside Park in Edgemead, thanks to the completion of a new makeover that has the park beaming, true to its name.

Led by the Edge Church community with some green-thumbed help from the City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department, the park underwent a welcomed transformation that saw it emerge on the other side as a new and improved public gem.

“Sunnyside Park has always been a central gathering place for many in our neighbourhood. We wanted to invest in its future, ensuring that it remains a safe, beautiful and welcoming environment for all,” said Executive Pastor of Edge Church, Rozanne Hammer.

Sunnyside Park’s improvement initiative took on a range of developments. Now, it boasts 30 additional trees (Harpephyllum caffrum, Syzgium cordatum and Ficus rubiginosa), play equipment like a wooden jungle gym, swings and rocking horses, new picnic tables and benches, laterite pathways, improved pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle access and enhancements to the dog park amid even more improvements.

The Church supported the upgrade with an impressive donation of R2.7 million for the work they saw as vital to the community and its future. To the latter, they are teaming up with the City’s ‘Friends’ initiative in an effort to maintain the space!

“The enhancements to Sunnyside Park are about so much more than infrastructure—it fosters a sense of belonging and well-being for all who visit. Our hope is that it remains a vibrant and well-loved recreational space for years to come,” said Councillor Higham.

“Seeing this vision come to life has been an incredible blessing to families, dog-walkers, schoolchildren and the broader community,” concludes Pastor Hammer.
