Happy World Hippo Day – To celebrate, we are taking a look at the cutest hippos in South Africa; we can’t get enough of these special babies.

South Africa (15 February 2022) – South Africa is home to many hippos, so in honour of World Hippo Day, we are looking at some of the best hippo sightings. Over the years, there have been some adorable hippo stories.

The 15th of February 2022 is World Hippo Day. The day was established to help raise awareness for the species. They are a fascinating species. Hippopotamus are herbivores and can weigh up to 2,000kg, making them the third-largest land mammal after elephants and rhinos. Hippos are primarily found in rivers, lakes, and mangrove swamps.

Did you know Columbia has a population of Hippo? They were introduced into the country by notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. Also, according to reports, the Hippo is the most dangerous mammal in Southern Africa. It can run up to 30km per hour and 8km per hour in water.

The chunky grey creatures are not always scary, though. In South Africa, we have seen many incredible sightings, some that made us laugh out loud, and some have left us in awe! St. Lucia has a high percentage of these crazy sightings due to being surrounded by an estuary. They have hippos entering petrol stations or keeping the local bowling greens trimmed.

These are some of the sightings we have seen over the years. Take a look at the videos we shared in the past below. Let us know which one is your favourite.
