A recent visit to Ipontshe Primary in Thembisa showcased the #GreenRisingZA initiative’s inspiring environmental education work as learners enthusiastically embraced tree planting and learned about sustainability.
Thembisa, South Africa (30 January 2025) – When it comes to the dire effects of environmental degradation and the impacts of climate change, nothing will change unless we rise and do something about it.
With Mzansi’s youngsters being back at school, the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) #GreenRisingZA initiative is back in full swing!
Imagine 10 million young people rising up to protect our oceans, clean our rivers, create lush parks, minimise pollution, and take meaningful green actions to combat the growing impacts of climate change. This is the vision of #GreenRisingZA: mobilising millions of youth to tackle today’s critical environmental challenges.
Supported by UNICEF South Africa the WESSA team recently visited Ipontshe Primary School in Thembisa to promote environmental conservation and sustainability.
The bright, sunny skies provided the perfect backdrop for the children at the school to roll up their sleeves and learn about planting, preserving the environment and climate action!
Learners not only got to immerse themselves in fun tree-planting activities but also got to discover how trees contribute to the ecosystem and learn about how they can care for the environment around them in meaningful ways.
Through this initiative, 53 trees were planted, not only enhancing the school environment but also contributing to a greener, healthier future for the community, one young heart at a time!
