Tiny Twiggy was dealt a tough hand early on in life. Confiscated from heartbreaking circumstances, the little fighter caught a lucky streak, thanks to a team of animal heroes who rescued her. Despite coming in with a broken leg that had been left untreated in her previous life, once again, luck was on Twiggy’s side when kindness covered her surgery!

Zeerust, South Africa (03 March 2025)—Tiny Twiggy, the pup, needed help saving her leg.

Confiscated from heartbreaking circumstances, Twiggy had already overcome a lot in her young life—beating Parvo and losing two of her siblings. So, when the Cat Angel Refuge took her in, they knew they needed to do all they could to give her a fighting chance. The opportunity to run and play like any other young pooch. A little luck.

Brought in with a broken leg that was left untreated before her rescue, the team knew surgery would be the only way to give Twiggy her leg back.

Cue two doses of incredible kindness.

The first saw a specialist offer the Cat Angel Refuge a massive discount on the surgery. The second saw a pet insurer come to the party to cover her surgery in full, as well as contributing to Twiggy’s Parvo vet bill for her and her siblings!

“The good [news] is very very good,” shares the Cat Angel Refuge’s Jo Wilson in reflecting on the kindness.

“Twiggy has had her surgery and is recovering well. She has started using her leg now.”

To understand how much these acts matter, one has to understand that in the world of animal welfare, scraping together enough for the bare minimum is often a mammoth task—never mind costs like surgeries.

As such, the kindness that has helped Twiggy is not taken nonchalantly. Rather, it’s the very thing that reignites hope.

Helping Twiggy and Her Friends

Twiggy is one of many dogs who deserve a happy ending.

Right now, the Cat Angel Refuge are in the market for more kindness; more than ever, to make these happy endings—or at the very least, happier trails—possible.

The team are currently seeking dog food for the confiscated dogs they’ve taken in. Because these pups have growth and bone issues, they require high quality, higher protein foods.

Adding to this plight, the team have also faced numerous days of power issues and no water in Zeerust. This has impacted all the ‘human food’ as well as the animals’ special frozen meals due to the fridge and freezer turning off for prolonged periods of time.

“Our animals medications and vaccinations were lost, our camera security system and 2 outside flood lights also burnt. Sadly it was due to grid failure not power surgers so our insurance did not cover it,” Jo explains.

They have set up a BackaBuddy crowdfund to raise what they need to get solar and a borehole so that a crisis like this won’t happen again.

All those who wish to contribute can find the crowdfund campaign here.
