Among the incredible racing legends who did “all the things” at the Comrades Marathon. We’re also just as inspired by two women who stayed behind to help clean up the trash left behind from the race day festivities simply because it was the right thing to do.

Durban, South Africa (09 June 2025) – As the excitement faded at the end of an epic Comrades Marathon, many supporters, promoters, media members, and runners left the roads and sidelines, but two women stayed behind. Not because they weren’t looking forward to returning to the comforts of their homes after a long day of athletic camaraderie, but because they noticed all the litter left behind from the race day festivities.

In a post shared by the eThekwini Municipality, the two unnamed women said to be part of The Witness newspaper team were spotted and photographed rolling up their sleeves to help clean up the trash left behind on the road and the surrounding area where they had set up their stand during the event.

“Meet these two incredible ladies from The Witness newspaper stand, who took it upon themselves to clean where they had a table. As the crowds dispersed and the celebrations wound down, they stayed behind to ensure that the area they were utilising was left clean,” the post reads.

In images, the dedicated pair are seen working together with the City’s waste cleaners to rake and clear up the area of the discarded water packs and disposable cups left behind by the crowds.

Their decision to stay instead of leave, to pick up rakes instead of their bags and extend helping hands instead of shifting responsibility, demonstrated a level of humanity and environmental responsibility that is not only commendable but shines as a true example of community spirit.

The post has easily touched the hearts of many South Africans online, who flooded the comments section with sincere thanks and praised the women for not only contributing to cleaning efforts but for inspiring a level of responsibility that we should all strive for.

“Their commitment to cleanliness and community pride is a true inspiration. Thank you for reminding us that every small action counts,” eThekwini Municipality said.

If you happen to know these heroes, be sure to tag them in the comments so they can see all the heartfelt praise they deserve.
