The passionate team at Friends of Table Mountain has been hard at work keeping Cape Town’s iconic peak clean, safe, and thriving for everyone!

Cape Town, South Africa (03 September 2026) – The Friends of Table Mountain have been true to their word, keeping the gem that is the Table Mountain National Park clean, safe and thriving.

Friends of Table Mountain started this as an experimental service, but it quickly revealed just how vital thorough, widespread litter clean-ups are, particularly along winding park roads and busy tourist hotspots.

Today it is a public mountain users’ non-profit organisation, and its goal is to maintain a thriving park that benefits locals and tourists by protecting nature, creating jobs and uplifting nearby communities.

Leading by example, dedicated team member Innocent has been working tirelessly twice a week for the past six weeks. He is already approaching 150 bags of litter removed from Signal Hill, Lion’s Head and Table Mountain Road.

While the volume of litter varies, every single clean-up makes a tangible difference. His recent sweep through Deer Park yielded just six bags, and the area above Higgovale Quarry saw only five. By contrast, the last two clean-ups from Signal Hill to Lion’s Head produced 12 and more than 18 bags respectively, including building rubble dumped at the Lion’s Head parking area.

Reflecting on these achievements, Friends of Table Mountain’s Willem Boshoff noted that collecting such significant volumes during the quiet mid-winter months shows just how powerful their work is and indicated the need to ramp up the frequency of clean-ups considerably during the busy summer season.

“Our thanks to the SANParks Rangers, who often collect the full bags, and to members of the public who have helped Innocent with a lift or two along the way,” Willem said.

He further encouraged the public to make Friends of Table Mountain aware of any other areas with excessive littering.

“Friends of Table Mountain would like to identify the areas of greatest need and start raising funds to expand initiatives like this across the park.”
