Dating a South African is stressful! Well, that’s according to Irish comedian, Kyla Cobbler, who was left utterly dumbfounded when her South African partner said they would see her “now now”.

Global (15 October 2025) – As South Africans, we’re familiar with our colourful expressions and unique lingo of how we refer to things, but what happens when our significant others, who don’t happen to be from the land of green and gold and all things lekker, don’t?

Well, Irish comedian, Kyla Cobbler, had a bone to pick with our lingo, expressing how she didn’t understand what exactly her South African partner meant when they said they would see her “now”, “just now” or “now now”.

In a funny video posted on her Instagram, an unimpressed Kyla shared how nobody knows the struggle of having a South African partner, before mimicking how she’d often be told: “see you now” or “see you now now”.

“When? When are you gonna see me?” Kyla blurted out in funny frustration.

Dating someone who speaks a different language or simply uses lingo you don’t quite grasp can be a genuinely bilingual emotional rollercoaster. The experience often swings wildly between being hilariously funny and utterly defeating.

Kyla’s rant left viewers in stitches, with many responding with funny commentary about the “just now” and “now now” expressions and how they best interpreted them:

“South African here. We know that just now is sooner than now now,” commented @kelmcgee.

“South African here… you gotta LOVE us. Wait till he starts saying ‘awe shame that’s nice hey!’ Shame has many meanings, too, for us,” @claire.s.mack joked.

@pink_cape shared their interpretation:

“When you are not given a direct answer, you can expect us anytime from… being 5 minutes late until 5 hours late.
Now= on time
Now Now = 0 to 30mins
Just Now = 30mins to 2 hours
Later = 4 hours to a year.”

Hopefully, some of the advice and comments shed a little bit of light as to when Kyla could expect to see her partner again, or at least gave her a good laugh!
