Brought to life by community members, the scarecrows add a bit of magic to Stanford’s streets.

Stanford, Western Cape (09 September 2025) – Spring has just about sprung in the small village of Stanford in the Overberg, and so have the scarecrows! They’ve begun popping up all around town, ready to welcome the crowds that the annual Stanford in Bloom Spring Festival brings.

The scarecrows are a highlight of the season in town. Take a stroll through the village and you’ll spot them tucked in front of shops, schools, and gardens. Each one is a labour of love. Community members of all ages get involved – schools, businesses, families, friend groups, and talented crafters all bring their best scarecrow magic to life. With a prize up for grabs, the creations grow more imaginative every year.

We’ve caught a sneak peek of who’s who in this year’s showdown.

Returning scarecrow-maker Farai Mukonde, who won one of last year’s top prizes, was spotted at The Village Emporium carefully installing his latest masterpiece for this year’s festivities.

Over at Stanford Kitchen, a voluptuous, floral lady stands striking a pose beside her playful green dog.

At the library, scarecrow versions of the leading ladies from local author Bonnie Espie’s crime novel Making a Killing are keeping a watchful eye.

We’d highly recommend visiting Stanford to catch every scarecrow in action (there will be many more). They should hang around until 24 September, when Stanford in Bloom packs up for the year.
