In the playful video, Joshua McLachlan suggests that solar panels, gas cylinders and bottled water might just be the most useful presents for South Africans.

South Africa (05 March 2026) – South African comedian and content creator Joshua McLachlan has social media users laughing and nodding in agreement. This is after sharing a take on what he calls the “only essential” gift ideas for South Africans.

Joshua suggests that forget perfume, socks or gift cards. If you really want to impress a South African, there are only a few things that truly matter.

Solar panels.

With ongoing electricity disruptions still a reality in many parts of the country, the joke quickly lands with viewers who know that reliable power has become one of the most valuable “luxuries” in daily life.

Gas cylinder

An alternative  many households rely on for cooking when the lights go out. For plenty of South Africans, a full gas bottle can make the difference between a cold meal and a warm one.

And finally, a large bottle of water.

This reminds us of the recent frustrations experienced by residents in several communities who have had to deal with intermittent water supply issues.

Some joked that they would happily accept the proposal, while others added their own suggestions to the survival-style wishlist.
