Bridgerton fans in South Africa, this one’s for you. The ball is coming to South Africa, with stars from the spin-off Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story hopping in their modern carriages for a dazzling premiere. Here’s who to keep an eye out for!

South Africa (13 April, 2023) — Bridgerton had a chokehold on the world from the moment we discovered just how invested we could become in Regency-era affairs.

After all, the show peaked while South Africans and many other countries faced lockdown woes, and were in dire need of some high-society fictional gossip that didn’t involve Cyril Ramaphosa.

South Africans soon found themselves fascinated and enthralled by the world that spilt the tea whilst making it look fabulous. And, in 2021 ‘Bridgerton’ was our second-most searched movie/TV show on Google, coming second only to Squid Game.

Praised for its inclusivity and barrier-breaking moments, season two came in just as hot.

The hype around the second season saw South Africans pulling out all the stops in 2022, with the likes of Zozi Tunzi and Liesl Laurie-Mthombeni giving the Bridgerton cast a run for their money at Netflix’s Bridgerton soirée in SA.

All things considered, Bridgerton and South Africa have a bond. So, it only made sense for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story to premiere in our country too.

On 16 April, the bells of the ball will rally together for a dazzling affair. The best part of all? Queen Charlotte herself (or rather, ‘herselves’) will be gracing Western Cape soil.

Both Charlottes —the no-nonsense queen and fan-favourite Golda Rosheuvel whose sassy hair could put anyone in their place, as well as young Charlotte played by Arsema Thomas— will attend the premiere.

Fun fact: Thomas actually moved to South Africa before venturing UK-ward!

As for the Queen Charlotte debut, the Shondaland series is set to hit Netflix screens on 4 May. It’ll set the stage as a prequel to the hit series, and play on historical moments from the historical Queen Charlotte’s life.
