Watch as South African comedians turn a simple coffee shop visit into a hilarious debate over who gets served first
South Africa (26 September 2025) – What do you get when you mix South African comedians, a coffee shop called Coffee of Good Hope, and a few centuries of local history? A sketch that will have you laughing until your stomach hurts. While also making you think.
To mark Heritage Day, actor and comedian Themba Robin teamed up with Bouwer Bosch, Reggie Peace, Anel Wood, and Craig Jackson to deliver one of the funniest (and smartest) history lessons you will ever watch.
Set in a quirky coffee shop called ‘Coffee of Good Hope’. Get it? Cape of Good Hope? A barista finds herself in the middle of absolute chaos! Three very different customers, waiting to be served, all insisting they were “here first.” From demands for a “Queen-size tea” to a “National White coffee” to a very serious order for a “level one Africano,” it is clear this is not just about coffee.
Each character cleverly represents a slice of South Africa. The dialogue of ‘who was here first’ from the English to the Afrikaner to the African man. All arguing about who should order first. The back and forth is hilarious and filled with satire.
After watching the sketch, you find yourself replaying it again and again. For the giggles, sure. Also, because there is a clever subtext throughout.
It’s lines like
“You can’t just come here and take my place, I was here from 18:20.” Or “Can I get one of your BE-licious Africanos please” that just make you think.
But the punchline lands when the final customer walks in and casually orders a “Khoi-pacchino.” It is a subtle way to end the debate of “I was here first”.
Comedy gold indeed! The kind of sketch that makes you laugh, rewind, and then pause to appreciate how a simple café scene captures identity in a matter of minutes.
