As grown South Africans, we know better than to trust the ice cream tub or biscuit tin to actually contain these treats inside, but little locals are still learning the proudly South African lesson.

One young boy had his ‘canon event’ moment filmed recently, bonding thousands of South Africans.

South Africa (19 June, 2023) — Core memories were activated across South Africa recently after a video capturing a Proudly South African childhood moment reminded us all why we have trust issues in the most hilarious way.

Most grown South Africans know better than to trust an ice cream tub or biscuit tin to actually contain the treats on the cover, thanks to generations of South African parents recycling these containers, filling them up with anything and everything non-treat related.

That biscuit tin we eyed out for hours and worked up the courage to open only to discover sewing needles or leftovers unceremoniously trapped inside defined so many of us. Recently, one little local learnt the lesson to never trust an ice cream tub, and South Africans everywhere couldn’t help but laugh with him through the moment of realisation.

Filmed by his mom Dzuvha Zè Netshituni—who felt so guilty she decided to buy the ice cream in the end—the moment had South Africans bonding over their own ‘canon moments’; AKA ‘defining events’.
