In his latest skit, creator Ally Damon breaks down the uniquely South African way we use “shame,” leaving Americans more confused.

South Africa (11 December 2025) – South African content creator Ally Damon is back with another hilarious cultural breakdown, this time tackling one of Mzansi’s most versatile and confusing expressions: “shame.”

In his latest skit, Ally attempts to walk an American through the many layers of the word. And as expected, the explanation only makes things more complicated.

Ally’s video shows how “shame” in South Africa can mean anything from sympathy to mild mockery, depending entirely on context and tone. In the clip, he breaks it down with everyday examples.

When someone says they’re on a diet and living off those tiny Woolies salads? “Oh shame, man.” This is sympathy.

See a dog in a tiny jersey? “Oh shame that’s so cute.” This is affection.

Ally summarises it perfectly! A single expression that can signal love, pity, humour and judgement.
