Wynberg Cricket Club has a hilarious take on discipline as their captain took on heavy traffic for some extra cricket training.

Wynberg, South Africa (05 December 2025) – Have you ever wondered why South African cricket has been doing extremely well lately?

Why the Proteas keep racking up big results? Why our women’s team made it all the way to a World Cup final? Why players like Laura Wolvaardt casually stroll around as the No. 1 ODI batter in the world?

Easy.

The secret is grassroots discipline, and at Wynberg Cricket Club, discipline means RUNS.

One of the club’s traditions is taking fines very seriously. Their second team captain, Akbar Rinquest recently learned this the hard way when he was made to do runs on a busy road. Taxis, cars, and everyday passersby became part of his unconventional training ground.

Wynberg Cricket Club isn’t just about tough love on the streets. As one of the oldest clubs in the Western Province Cricket Association, with roots stretching back to the early 1930s, the club has a rich history of fostering talent. It boasts six senior teams and a vets team, with the 1st Team competing in the 1st Division B league. It’s a place where tradition meets high-level cricket, and where the next generation of Proteas stars is being shaped.

So while the country cheers as South Africa’s cricket stars shine on the world stage, Wynberg Cricket Club reminds us that the spirit of the game and a little tough love.
