A food hamper fills the cupboard today. A veggie garden helps fill it tomorrow. Stronger families mean better lives for the doggies they love!
Mpophomeni, KwaZulu-Natal (03 August 2026) – Funda Nenja’s food relief programme has once again brought much-needed care to families and their pets in Mpophomeni.
The animal welfare organisation – beyond its work in supporting connections between the community and their pets – has been delivering hampers to vulnerable families for several years now. Every care package includes food for families and their four-leggeds. Plus, one special ingredient makes these hampers even more meaningful – seeds!
Thanks to the ongoing support of Sunshine Seedling Services, families supported by the programme also receive veggie seedlings and are encouraged to start their own food gardens, which helps improve long-term food security.
It’s a continuation of Funda Nenja’s holistic approach that recognises that healthy communities are better equipped to care for their animals too.
The programme was recently extended to the organisation’s own community assistants, the very same local ambassadors and role models who help bring their impactful work to life every day.
A recent delivery went to the family of King, a much-loved dog who has become something of a familiar face on Funda Nenja’s social media.
King belongs to Izwi, one of the organisation’s class instructors, who lives with her mother and grandmother. She first approached Funda Nenja for help when King was only a few weeks old, unsure of how to care for such a young puppy.
Since then, ‘Kingie’, as the family affectionately calls him, has grown into a beloved member of the household.

During a recent visit, Kingie wasted no time running straight to his grandmother, Ntombi Nxumalo, where he was greeted with all of the cuddles.
The visit brought practical support for the family with a food hamper, veggie seedlings and winter warmth items. King’s grandmother shared her gratitude with the organisation in an endearing video message.
“Greetings to everyone at Funda Nenja. I would like to sincerely thank you for your support and generosity. This is King’s granny, Nxumalo. We are now warm and have food in the house. Thank you very much, and may God bless you abundantly and replenish your resources.” she said.
In homes where every helping hand counts, a food parcel, a handful of seedlings and a wagging tail can mean far more than they seem. Funda Nenja’s efforts help families and their beloved dogs look ahead with a little more certainty.
