The Masifunde Gogo! project is bringing old and new generations together in Diepsloot, proving that a grandparent’s love and a good story are at the heart of creating a community rooted in learning and connection.
Diepsloot, Johannesburg (03 September 2025) – There’s nothing quite like those warm, cherished moments between grandparents and their grandchildren, where stories of the olden days and exciting folktales come to life, igniting a sense of wonder and joy in the little ones.
This sentiment was at the heart of the Diepsloot Library, which came alive with storytelling, song and dance recently as more than 100 gogos and mkhulus gathered to celebrate the official launch of the Masifunde Gogo! project in Diepsloot.
The initiative by goGOGOgo champions literacy, storytelling and intergenerational connections between older persons and the children they are raising.
goGOGOgo is a social impact organisation dedicated to uplifting communities through building intergenerational relationships through learning, storytelling, and placemaking.
With over 9 million children in South Africa being raised by their grandparents, placing older persons at the centre as custodians of culture and knowledge, goGOGOgo creates inclusive spaces where wisdom meets opportunity and, most importantly, builds bridges between generations through dialogue and shared experiences.
Masifunde Gogo! (Let’s Read Gogo!) is the organisation’s flagship literacy programme, designed to ignite a love of reading among older persons and their grandchildren, while strengthening their ties to local libraries and community resources.

At the Diepsloot launch, each gogo and mkhulu received two beautifully illustrated children’s books created by Book Dash, gifted by goGOGOgo. The event was hosted in partnership with Big Fish Homebase, Vukuzenzele Association for Older Persons, and the Diepsloot Library. Participants also enjoyed a guided library tour and on-site membership registration, ensuring ongoing access to books and learning opportunities.
The organisation extends heartfelt thanks to the partners and supporters who made this activation possible and created a day filled with laughter, learning, and legacy.
As goGOGOgo continues to scale its impact, Masifunde Gogo! stands as a testament to the power of storytelling, the importance of inclusive literacy, and the enduring wisdom of our elders.
