Greg, who goes far and wide collecting bread tags to support worthy causes, gets his own set of wheels!
Hermanus, South Africa (17 June 2026) – The Rotary Club of Hermanus, thanks to a wonderfully generous local sponsor, recently delivered a second-hand electric mobility scooter to a man named Greg through the Overstrand Wheelchair Association.
Greg is a giver. Despite his own mobility challenges, he wheels out of Hawston, week after week, travelling far and wide to collect bread tags.
“Many of you will recognise Greg, who travels from Hawston far and wide collecting bread tags to support worthy causes.” shares the club.
The Bread Tags and Bottle Tops project, championed nationally by The Sweethearts Foundation, is a community initiative where individuals, schools, and businesses collect plastic bread tags and bottle tops instead of throwing them away.
Once tops and tags are collected, they then go on to recycling plants where they get melted down and turned into products like seedling trays and outdoor furniture. Every rand generated from those sales goes toward buying wheelchairs for South Africans on a national waiting list.
The impact of the initiative is life-changing, and Greg has been part of making that happen for others for years. So it’s especially meaningful that this time, the community got to give something back to him.
Thanks to the Rotary Club and their sponsor, Greg is now the proud owner of an electric mobility scooter. It won’t take him out onto the R43, but around Hawston it’s going to give him a level of freedom and independence that will make a difference to his everyday life.
The man who has always gone the extra mile for others can now get around a little more easily himself. And that’s a beautiful thing.
“Thank you to our generous sponsor for making this possible. Your kindness will have a lasting impact.” the club adds.
Greg, keep being a hero to your community by collecting those tags! If readers would like to get involved, look up The Sweethearts Foundation and find a collection point near you.
