Three juvenile hippos learned a valuable lesson from an elephant bull but the video has us in giggles as they scattered to get away from the bull.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (04 December 2018) – Hippos are classed as one of the most dangerous animals in the world because they are highly aggressive. They are known to charge and capsize boats that come to near their resting spots in water. Considering they are lumpy herbivores, this is a crazy fact. Elephant bulls can be equally as temperamental so club the two together and you could have a recipe for disaster. Thankfully, this story will leave you giggling rather than worried.
Recently, three adorably curious juvenile hippos wandered out of their river haven near a large elephant bull. At first, both the hippos and the bull froze and took one another in.
The video footage was taken by Evan Malsbury in the Umfolozi River in South Africa.
“We were part of an organized tour group that had arranged for a river cruise. There were several other boats on the river, nothing too unusual prior to this sighting, just many hippo groups grazing along the river.
According to the boat driver and the tour director, seeing elephants along the river as part of this cruise was extremely unusual, so everyone on board was jockeying for a better view. This was then that we saw an elephant close to the water’s edge. The elephant was alone for a while before the trio of hippos appeared and this was when the drama was taken up a notch. The hungry hippos were no match for the elephant but thankfully no one but the tree was hurt.
Apparently, this was rare even for the tour director/cruise driver, it was the most unusual thing seen during our 14 day trip to South Africa. The tour director proposed that the hippos were younger and that they were learning about how to interact with elephants, and that the elephants were just trying to cross the river. It all seemed like a territorial standoff to me though.”
In the end, the bull showed the trio who the boss was and they scattered off back into the water. It seems they learned a valuable lesson but the entertainment value in their lesson was our favourite part.
