Through its Awareness Walk, Home of Hope is inviting the community to step forward with compassion, understanding and hope for children and young adults living with FASD.

Cape Town, South Africa (03 September 2026) – South Africa is sadly near the top of the list when it comes to alcohol abuse, which also means the country has high rates of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).

FASD can profoundly impact a child’s development, presenting a combination of physical, cognitive and emotional challenges that shape how they navigate daily life.

Experiencing the world through an FASD lens can feel overwhelming, fast-paced and unpredictable for a young person, as their brain processes sensory input and social rules differently. This can leave a child feeling misunderstood, anxious or constantly trying to catch up to expectations designed for neurotypical peers.

As a result, many children living with FASD are sadly abandoned, rejected or neglected. But that is where Home of Hope steps in, providing holistic services to support these children and young adults.

Home of Hope has evolved from solely being a “place of safety” for abandoned children into a multi-faceted organisation offering a unique, long-term solution for the protection of children and young adults.

To shed more light on the work they do, as well as an avoidable condition that affects so many young people before they are even born, the charity will host a FASD Awareness Walk on Wednesday, 9 September, at the Blouberg Beachfront, with participants meeting at Eden on the Bay at 8.30 am.

From seniors and juniors to the fit and not-so-fit, everyone is welcome to attend, wear their funkiest socks and walk 4 km. Participants are asked to purchase a R20 FASD awareness sticker, either before the event or on the day of the walk.

For those who cannot join the walk, the call is to support Home of Hope by buying a sticker and helping create as much awareness as possible.

Stickers are available at:

  • Home of Hope Charity Shop – 215 Blaauwberg Road, Table View
  • Home of Hope Office – 3 College House, Village Walk Street, Parklands
  • Stickers will also be available on the morning of the walk
