Thanks to his high school principal, the one man who believed in him, Jaden Zwane was able to transform his life from a troubled high school dropout to a driven leader and now a thriving artisan.
Katlehong, South Africa (29 July 2026) – When a younger Jaden Zwane first walked through the gates of Katlehong Engineering School of Specialisation, he was what many considered a troubled, rebellious young boy.
Jaden had dropped out before. He was older than everyone else in class and carried a heavy weight of feeling like life had already left him behind.
But where others saw a problem, one remarkable man saw potential.
That man was Mr Opperman, Jaden’s school principal, who very well became a father to him.
“There are moments in life that completely rewrite a person’s destiny, and almost every single one of mine has your name attached to it. Everything I have achieved, and the man I have become, is because you chose to see me when I felt entirely invisible,” penned Jaden in a heartfelt post dedicated to Mr Opperman.
Jaden opened up about a particular incident in his Grade 11 year. He had been accused of stealing a phone. Nearly everyone was convinced he had done it except one man.
“I was crying in a corner, broken, until you walked up to me, looked me in the eyes, and said: ‘I believe you didn’t steal that phone, Zwane’,” Jaden recounted.
It was Mr Opperman. His words pulled that young man out of a dark place and gave Jaden a reason to prove the one man who believed in him right. Not only did Jaden pull himself together and turn over a new leaf, but he went on to become a leader as Head Boy of the school in his matric year.
“You pushed me to run, handed me the microphone, gave me the blueprint to lead, and taught me how to stand tall. You didn’t just give me an education; you helped me get my ID, my driver’s license, and now, through the Actom Apprenticeship, my qualification as an Artisan,” Jaden said.

'I'm Struggling With Two!' – Student in Awe of One-Armed Ceramics LecturerHe continued to honour Opperman’s ability to transform an entire school community for the better. But on a deeply personal level, Jaden considers Opperman as the man who saved his life.
“You built a bridge for a boy who thought he had no future, and I walk across it every day with immense pride. Thank you for believing in Zwane when no one else would. I am forever in your debt, Sir,” a grateful Jaden shared.
