The Junior Springboks produced an entertaining game at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium as they successfully secured the U20 Rugby Championship title with a round to spare.

Gqeberha, South Africa (04 May 2026) – The Junior Springboks gave the home crowd in Gqeberha plenty to celebrate on Sunday as they powered their way to the 2026 U20 Rugby Championship title with one round still to play.

Playing in front of an energetic crowd at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, the Junior Boks produced an exciting all-round performance to beat Australia 56-17 and successfully claim the title on home soil.

The Junior Boks wasted little time stamping their authority on the match, dominating territory early on with smart tactical kicking and relentless pressure. Scrumhalf Hendré Schoeman kept Australia pinned back for large parts of the opening exchanges, while the South African forwards brought plenty of physicality around the set pieces and breakdowns.

Australia battled hard throughout the encounter but found themselves under pressure due to repeated infringements, which led to a number of yellow cards during the first half. Despite at times being reduced to 13 players, the visitors continued to fight and managed to create a few promising attacking moments of their own.

South Africa continued going head-to-head to make their dominance count. Even with the scoreboard moving quickly in favour of the hosts, the atmosphere inside the stadium remained one of celebration as supporters got behind the young South African side at every opportunity.

As confidence grew, the Junior Boks played with even more freedom. Their combinations clicked smoothly, the forwards controlled the physical battle, and the backline continued to find space out wide.

Earlier in the day, Argentina claimed their first win of the tournament after defeating New Zealand 25-17.

The occasion highlighted the excitement surrounding junior rugby in South Africa, with local supporters turning out in numbers to witness the country’s next generation of stars continue their impressive rise.
