Recent maintenance work has strengthened viewing hides, added fire breaks and given several facilities a fresh new look at the Tshwane nature reserve.
Pretoria, South Africa (18 August 2026) – A little maintenance goes a long way when it comes to keeping a nature reserve safe, accessible and welcoming, and there has been plenty happening behind the scenes at Rietvlei Nature Reserve.
Recent work at the reserve has included structural reinforcement and maintenance at the Coots Corner hide, as well as the creation of fire breaks at both Coots Corner and the Island View Hide.
The Hippo View and Council Hides have also received a fresh coat of paint, giving the popular viewing spots a much-needed refresh.
While these jobs may not be as eye-catching as spotting wildlife, they play an important role in keeping the reserve’s facilities in good condition and ensuring visitors can continue enjoying the natural surroundings safely.
The Friends of Rietvlei Nature Reserve thanked everyone involved in the work for helping maintain the facilities and support the ongoing protection of the reserve.
Now visitors can see and experience the hides, stunning surroundings, and another corner of Rietvlei is ready to welcome nature lovers.
