A Western, but make it South African! SA is getting its own Western genre series galloping to screens soon.
South Africa (20 August, 2023) — When most of us think of Western films or TV shows, an American cowboy with a bone to pick and tumbleweed to tackle usually pops into our minds. However, as modern-day efforts attempt to revive the genre in works like Yellowstone which have taken a new generation of TV enthusiasts by storm, South Africa is trying its own hand at the genre—’Outlaws’.
Since a South African won My Kind of Country earlier this year; we think it’s only fitting to expand our horizons into cowboy’s land further.
A new series, ‘Outlaws’ is set to gallop to screens come September and will be the first of its kind for SA in the contemporary Western genre.
Starring actors on the come-up like Lehlohonolo Mayez and Nirvana Nokwe-Mseleku alongside Thembinkosi Mthembu, Outlaws tells the story of feuding families, the Zulu Biyelas and the Basotho Tseoles, after a massive cow theft sparks all the drama.
And, just like any good Western, there’s a love story intertwined too.
The series is proudly South African from setting to production; produced by Tshedza Pictures and shot on the Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal border as well as in KZN’s dreamy greenlands.
Beyond the thrill of a new show, it’s awesome to see an African take on a genre synonymous with Westernised film and television (in the most literal sense). After all, the Westernised world has had more than enough story picking from our parts of the world.
The series will air on Showmax from 6 September.
